Support sport and physical activity of girls
ABOUT PROJECT
Project summary
The pattern of physical activity of children and young people in Serbia and Hungary corresponds to the pattern of their peers in Europe; boys are more active than girls and the level of physical activity declines with age. Moreover, boys are more involved in organized sports and prefer more intensive activities, while girls give preference to informal or recreational types of activities. Study of lifestyles of children and youth in Europe, confirmed that sporting activities and healthy eating habits are positively correlated, while sedentary behaviour is correlated with unhealthy eating habits. Increasing amounts of research suggest not only an association between this sedentary behaviour and obesity, but also other unwelcome conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer and metabolic dysfunction. The low level of physical activity among girls has significant consequences for their health and well-being, both now and in adulthood. The amount of sedentary activity for girls needs to be minimized, particularly in teenage years, in order to get the diverse physical and mental longer term health benefits that come from greater engagement in physical activity. There is therefore a clear need for intervention to raise the level of participation in sports and physical activity among girls in order to improve their health. Girls are not getting enough exercise and schools hold the key to encouraging girls to be more active. Possibilities of doing sports in school have not been used to the full extent although they provide and organize physical/sporting activities through compulsory physical education (PE) classes, extracurricular and out-of-school activities, including school sport. Moreover, there is a gender-based pattern when it comes to preferences in doing sports (competitive, recreational) and this should be taken into consideration when planning sport activities in school sport, local sport clubs and recreational sport facilities.
